Irritable bowel syndrome, IBS for short, is a condition of the large intestine that can cause a variety of symptoms including diarrhea, constipation, abdominal cramping, pain, and bloating. While the specific cause of IBS is as of yet unknown, there are a number of modifiable factors that can help to treat or prevent the condition and help you avoid long-term consequences such as hemorrhoids or nutrient inadequacy. Proper evaluation and diagnosis are necessary to rule out other possible conditions that may be causing similar symptoms like small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).
