I was competing at the 2016 Grand Canyon State Games as part of my preparation for the US Police & Fire Championships (USPFC). I was warming up for my first event, shot put, when I heard something pop and felt what can only be described as fire running down my left leg. I tried to compete, but after one throw, I realized something was seriously wrong as I could hardly stand. Luckily, the officials had called over the doctor and students from SCNM who were working in the medic tent. They immediately went to work on my leg so that I could make it home safely and had me follow up the next day at the Neil Riordan Center.

At the clinic, they explained that I had torn my gluteus medius but that they could treat the injury so I could still compete in the USPFC the following weekend. With a few injections, acupuncture, and other treatments, the bruising and pain subsided enough that I managed to win five gold medals in hammer, discus, shot put, and the Toughest Competitor Alive (mixed doubles and individual) at the USPFC!

Thanks to everyone who made sure I didn’t miss a shift or a chance to represent my team, Arizona Firefighter Athletics, my department, and the great state of Arizona.
