A Healthier Approach to Menstrual Care

Minimizing Toxic Exposure Through Tampons

Sonoran University’s Dr. Sarah Trahan was recently featured on Fox 10 sharing insight on trace metals in tampons. To watch the full video click on “Click to View”.

What You Can Do To Minimize Exposure

Conventional tampons often contain synthetic fibers, chlorine-bleached materials, and chemical additives like fragrances, which may lead to exposure to harmful chemicals. In a recent study published in Environmental International, researchers discovered levels of toxic metals, including Barium, Cadmium, Arsenic, and Lead, in tampons. These chemicals are likely introduced through the soil where the cotton or other materials are grown or through the chemicals used on crops.

While we wait for more comprehensive research results to take the stage, there are practical steps you can take to minimize your exposure and support your body’s detoxification processes.

Regular Heart Monitoring

Schedule annual checkups and physicals.

  • Regular checkups with your healthcare provider ensure that you catch any potential issues early. During a physical, you can discuss any concerns you have regarding your health and monitor key metrics such as cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure, which are critical for long-term well-being.

Request serum labs to assess the health of your liver and kidneys, which are vital for detoxification.

  • The liver and kidneys play essential roles in detoxification, filtering out waste and toxins from the body. Blood tests help assess how well these organs are functioning.

Lifestyle Practices for Detoxification

Exercise regularly

  • Engaging in consistent physical activity enhances circulation, which helps move toxins and waste through the body. Exercise increases sweat production, which is another method by which the body can expel toxins, such as heavy metals. Additionally, it helps support lymphatic drainage, which is vital for detoxifying and reducing inflammation. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.

Use saunas

  • Suans, particularly infrared saunas, are known to help eliminate toxins through sweat. The heat increases core body temperature, promoting sweating, which can help flush out toxis such as heavy metals, chemicals, and environmental pollutants. Regular suana sessions (2-3 times a week) may support your body’s detox process and help improve skin health.

Stay hydrated

  • Proper hydration is fundamental to detoxification. Water is essential for kidney function, which filters waste products and toxins from the blood. Staying hydrated also helps support digestion, keeps your skin health, and flushes out toxins more efficiently through urine. Aim for 8-10 glasses of water per day, more if you exercise or are exposed to hot weather.

Safer Alternatives to Conventional Tampons

Switching to menstrual products made from medical-grade materials can help reduce exposure to potentially harmful substances:

  • Menstrual Cups
    • Menstrual cups are an eco-friendly, cost-effective alternative to conventional tampons. Made from medical-grade silicone, these cups are reusable for years and provide long-lasting protection without the use of synthetic materials or chemicals. Brands like Saalt Cup are known for their durability, comfort, and leak-proof design. Menstrual cups also have the added benefit of holding more fluid, making them ideal for longer wear.
  • Period Panties
    • Period panties, such as those made by Thinx and Proof, are designed with multiple layers of absorbent material to prevent leaks and ensure comfort. They are reusable, reducing waste and offering a chemical-free, breathable alternative to tampons. These panties are made from cotton and other natural materials, which help minimize irritation while offering reliable protection during your period.
  • Menstrual Discs
    • Menstrual discs, like those from Flex and Cora, are made from medical-grade silicone or polymer and provide a discreet, comfortable alternative to traditional tampons and pads. Discs sit lower in the vaginal canal and can be worn during activities such as swimming or exercising. They are also reusable, eco-friendly, and non-toxic, providing an option that supports both personal health and the environment.

Additional Support

At Sonoran University, our environmental medicine doctors can test baseline levels of heavy metals in your body. If indicated, chelation therapy and other detoxification treatments can be implemented to help reduce your toxic load safely and effectively.

By taking these proactive measures and staying informed, you can better protect your health while encouraging positive changes in the menstrual care industry. Together, we can push for safer, more transparent options for everyone.
